Heres a little update on how my Datsun LQ4 swap is going.. and a little about it from the beginning.
Drove it home for a thousand bucks and just ripped into it. Im glad its coming along like it is. I know it seems crazy that I ripped into that body and welded the headlight buckets to the fenders and got rid of the side markers and all that crazy stuff, but it was actually for the sake of the car, as I had knocked on quite a few spots and they were of course bondoed. Took the time to replace all the sheetmetal that needed to be. Worth it in the end. Heres my mod list of parts that are sitting in my room or already on the car - 1977 Datsun 280Z - LQ4 6.0 (LS2 iron block) - sanderson headers - LS1 intake - W4MP tune - RAM lvl 3 HD clutch - 15 lb flywheel - T56 - B&M Precision Sport - LS2 oil pan - Full 3.5" Exhaust - Dynomax Bullits - Dynomax muffler - JTR aluminum radiator - Here are some pictures from beginning to now. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Looks good. Why not do a cam while the motor is apart?
What do you plan on runing |

My budget is pretty much done for. I have the standalone harness and computer with a tune on it already, plus an LS1 intake and a couple other goodies, so It should run good enough for now..
All it needs to be driveable is a fuel pump, some fittings, water pump-alt-starter, and a driveshaft. It should be nearing low 11's with high 120's trap with the setup now if I can get some tires. Nobody has put a LQ4 in a 280 yet So thats a mere guess. |

Found it from some dumbass kid in Brazil, he went and told all his buddies how bad he ripped me off XD
Guy with a LS2 swapped Datsun is trapping 135 and running a 10.8, thats just with a mild cam and all the stuff to do the swap. Nothing else. People with lightly modded LQ4's are putting down very impressive numbers to say the least. So I think I should be just a wee bit slower than his. |

>2500lbs full race weight most likely.
280s weigh more than 260s and 240s weigh much less than either one. a lot of weight is in those goofy bumpers, which im sure he is tossing or has already tossed you are making progress so fast. cant wait to see this thing out roaming the streets.

i doubt you will trap over 125 with that setup. the lq4 engine is 325 hp in stock trim, adding headers, an ls1 intake and tune MIGHT put you at 420 hp - being generous. the lq4 has dished pistons (-6.5cc) and with those 317 heads you are sitting around 9:1 compression. excellent choice over an lt1, though. will definately be a tire shredder.
the small cammed ls2 has MANY advantages over a mild, bolt-on lq4. the heads, intake, compression, and cam are a few. tuning is everything with these engines...keep that in mind. i also bought an lq4 shortblock, but i have a slightly more aggressive piston..and cam..and intake..and heads...err yeah.

Im curious how he will gain 95hp with just an ls1 intake and headers. He may gain 30 tops from a header and an ls1 intake. BUT anyway this is a cool ass swap. If I ever build another ls1 swapped car a z car will probably house the motor

Sweet swap, the only issue would be hooking up...
I would love to do a LS swap into a 240 SX someday...My old 350 V8 240 SX was a torque monster...alotta fun... Anyone know if the older guy with the Champaign 2nd Gen RX-7 ever sold his LT1 RX-7? |

I will have a tune, MAF, LS1 intake, Headers, 80mm smoothed TB and full 3.5" exhaust and no power steering.
A completely stock truck engine in the truck gained a little over 45hp and 50ft lbs from a tune.... Here are the specs from that Orange LS2 Datsun that I mentioned 409.56 hp. 391.11 torque. 10.852 @ 131.98 Ph33r http://videos.streetfire.net/video/a...b600dd1102.htm Last edited by Datsun364Z; 12-17-2007 at 03:45 PM. |

Must have been one badass tune lol....i dont think you will gain that much from a tune and bolt ons. I dont know what my car made stock but with intake, exhaust, and a tune i made 327/333. I bet that car was pretty damn light though. |

Weighs in as much as mine should, around 2650.
The only thing besides different motor that that car has over mine is a rear end that will handle alot more power, mine is suppsedly good for some people until about 450hp. On that tune I believe they pulled like 31* of timing and ended up with that gain. |

lol Im not doing anymore guesstimates because thats just not in any way accurate, but hocky, I know for damn sure it will trap over 115.. that would be completely sad if it didn't and I would most likely throw the car in the trash.
We will find out this summer I guess :P |

i'm guessing these are wheel hp numbers. you'll probably be somewhere around 340-350 whp after a tune. a strong bolt-on ls1 car will dyno ~350 whp. granted you have 18 more cid, your compression ratio is 1.25 points LOWER, it will probably be a wash. the tb won't gain anything and all ls1 cars came from gm with a maf. stock mafs will support 500 wheel, so a stock one will suit you just fine. if you spend money in the right places that thing will run good, but it appears you should've stuck with an lt1 build.
i can't see mid 120 traps out of a 350 whp 2,800lb raceweight car...not @ 2,500 ft DA anyhow.
